For Immediate Release June 1, 2009
LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER PRIDE MONTH, 2009 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
Forty years ago, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City resisted police harassment that had become all too common for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Out of this resistance, the LGBT rights movement in America was born. During LGBT Pride Month, we commemorate the events of June 1969 and commit to achieving equal justice under law for LGBT Americans.
LGBT Americans have made, and continue to make, great and lasting contributions that continue to strengthen the fabric of American society. There are many well-respected LGBT leaders in all professional fields, including the arts and business communities. LGBT Americans also mobilized the Nation to respond to the domestic HIV/AIDS epidemic and have played a vital role in broadening this country’s response to the HIV pandemic.
Due in no small part to the determination and dedication of the LGBT rights movement, more LGBT Americans are living their lives openly today than ever before. I am proud to be the first President to appoint openly LGBT candidates to Senate-confirmed positions in the first 100 days of an Administration. These individuals embody the best qualities we seek in public servants, and across my Administration — in both the White House and the Federal agencies — openly LGBT employees are doing their jobs with distinction and professionalism.
The LGBT rights movement has achieved great progress, but there is more work to be done. LGBT youth should feel safe to learn without the fear of harassment, and LGBT families and seniors should be allowed to live their lives with dignity and respect.
My Administration has partnered with the LGBT community to advance a wide range of initiatives. At the international level, I have joined efforts at the United Nations to decriminalize homosexuality around the world. Here at home, I continue to support measures to bring the full spectrum of equal rights to LGBT Americans. These measures include enhancing hate crimes laws, supporting civil unions and Federal rights for LGBT couples, outlawing discrimination in the workplace, ensuring adoption rights, and ending the existing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in a way that strengthens our Armed Forces and our national security. We must also commit ourselves to fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic by both reducing the number of HIV infections and providing care and support services to people living with HIV/AIDS across the United States.
These issues affect not only the LGBT community, but also our entire Nation. As long as the promise of equality for all remains unfulfilled, all Americans are affected. If we can work together to advance the principles upon which our Nation was founded, every American will benefit. During LGBT Pride Month, I call upon the LGBT community, the Congress, and the American people to work together to promote equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2009 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon the people of the United States to turn back discrimination and prejudice everywhere it exists.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this first day of June, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.
BARACK OBAMA

this is a good start but i think we need more now. keep the movement going Goverment, dont stop until everyone no matter their sexual orientation, gender identity, anything can walk down the street with their head held high knowing that this country respects them and that they are no longer treated as a second class citizen just because they are unique

this is all great but its all just promises and empty gestures. obama needs to start doing things that are real. yes DOMA was repealed but that doesn't mean much. give us something tangible obama and we will show our gratitude then
This is absolutely amazing. Im glad they elected him as president and Sarah pay-a-ho or whatever is so stupid i mean honestly what did the LGBT community do to her.
I wanna use this as a source but I have no idea what to consider this. Is there a citation somewhere so I can get the original location of this article?
Wow that's really great i am happy he finally past something for us and with his push for equality in our military i may not have lost faith in President Obama yet
i was like only a few months away from being able to vote. but if i could have i would have vote for him. final a president that can actually make it through a speech with no mistakes.

Best news a president can give is that he suports all of us no matter what our sexuality is
No matter how much I greatly dislike Obama, this is at least a step toward something better. Its a very small step but it is a step. No he needs to get started working on getting marriage legal.
OK i realy dont like obama... but hellz ya dude you go this makes me not like u just a lil bit less lol i cant wait for June to come so i can totaly blow this out the watah lol
this makes me soo happy (:
although i understand people's opinions about how it shouldn't have to be done...but now is it going to continue in june this year?
What I wish would be for people not to even have to do things like this.... i mean that if people accepted LGBT people we wouldn't have to do this.... what if it was christians that this was happening to... would LGBT people help them or turn our backs like they have us... just a different perspective of things
At least he is acknowledging us. there aren't many politicians or of course presidents that do that. i have to say, its a giant step forward from Bush.

Awesome for the president to say that, something that the LGBT community hasn't heard from a politician for a while, but its only a start. I'm hoping he actually does more to help the LGBT community in america.
I agree with jaymes. i think he is a crook, he is not standing behind any of his promises, there used to be 5 states and now there are none. i used to support but not I don't.
him officially declaring what we had already declared our selves? i see no change.

As much as I am sure we all appreciate this small declaration by President Obama, I think it is quite trivial to the things he keeps promising to do, and procrastinating on. Hopefully this is the beginning of a trend where he will live by the words he utters.
If only Obama could do something more tangible for the gay community than this sad and late lip service then I might be more inclined to like this man, but I must rather say I like the way he handling our foreign policy, it is very tactfull
UGH change my butt. Isn't it wonderful that we have a president who we elected with the idea that he would repeal DOMA, and when he gets in office he supports and defends it. hooray for more time on the back burner! I am SO PISSED at obama.
This is amazing! I hope this means Gays/Lesbians/Bisexuals/Transgenders will stop being fired for their sexual orentation.. and legalize gay marriages?
Thats cool I dident know well i think we are on a good note with Obama.... I wonder what he has planed next

I honestly don't pay much attention to the details of politics, but I am very glad Obama did this, it is indeed a good start. I kinda like him, now. ^.^
i agree with kadyn, we don't have equal rights so what is the point of a whole month dedicated in pride when we can't show it by having the same abilities as straight couples but i do still support him he's making strides.
i feel the same way as austin on this. much respect. although i didnt vote for him.
